Tavis Smiley and Senator Barack Obama had a rift that led to Tavis Smiley putting Obama "on blast" for not attending the State of the Black Union Conference. Tavis Smiley is one of the editors for the Covenant with Black America and host of Tavis Talks, a TV show that comes on PBS. He does work on the Tom Joyner Morning Show and NPR, and also holds the State of the Black Union Conference every year. Tavis felt that Obama's decline to attend the State of the Black Union Conference was a slap in the face of black people. However, many felt that Smiley was simply taking the issue personally. Dr. Watkins was one of the people that helped Rev. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton get Don Imus off the air after he referred to the Rutgers Women's basketball players as "Nappy Headed Hoes". He too issues a State of the Black Union Address from YourBlackWorld.com. Dr. Watkins has appeared on ESPN, CNN, BET, Fox News, CBS and other networks fighting for racial equality. He and Al Sharpton appeared on The Wendy Williams Experience in New York, and Watkins has also gotten into powerful feuds with Bill O'Reilly of Fox News (The O'Reilly Factor) and Sean Hannity of Hannity & Colmes. He has appeared with Michael Eric Dyson many times, The Rev. Jesse Jackson and other African-Americans fighting for equal rights for black people. Watkins was one of the first to bring the Jena 6 case to light in national media, and he also was the one who gave Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson the idea to attack Don Imus' corporate sponsors. It was ultimately Watkins' idea that took Imus off the air. Dr. Watkins chose not to attend the State of the Black Union Conference for 2008, mainly because of concern that corporate interests, mainstream media and partisan politics would skew the perspective of the event.
